The week before Day 1: a schedule for 29 August – 4 September 2027

The BATAS editorial team··4 min read

The seven days before Sunday, 5 September 2027 are the last seven in which anything can be done. What can be done is not learning; it is stabilising, rehearsing and staging.

This is a schedule, and the reasoning behind each part of it.

The principle

Three jobs, in this order: hold what you have, keep the answer shape warm, and remove every logistical unknown. Anything that is not one of those three is not this week's work.

The schedule

DayMorning (2 hours)Afternoon (1 hour)Notes
Sun 29 AugPolitical and Public International Law: one-pager read once, then ten flags testedOne timed answer (Political)Start the sleep shift tonight
Mon 30 AugCommercial and Taxation: one-pager, then ten flagsOne timed answer (Commercial)Stop caffeine after noon
Tue 31 AugCivil Law and Land Titles: one-pager, ten flagsOne timed answer (Civil)Confirm the venue and the journey, in writing
Wed 1 SeptRemedial Law: one-pager, ten flags — this one gets the mostLogistics day: travel the route at the examination hour; pack the bag; check the documents against the instructionsNothing academic after 4 p.m.
Thu 2 SeptCriminal Law and Labor: one-pagers, ten flags eachOne timed answer (Criminal)Sleep at your target hour
Fri 3 SeptRemedial and Ethics again: flags onlyOne timed answer (Remedial)Read the examination's instructions, once, slowly
Sat 4 SeptOne-pagers only, read once, in the morningNothingBag by the door; early night; no questions

Total: about four hours a day, mostly retrieval, and one timed answer daily. That is deliberately little.

Why so little

Because the marginal value of an hour of revision in this week is close to zero, and the marginal cost — in fatigue, in anxiety, in a disrupted sleep schedule — is at its highest of the year. The week exists to arrive on Sunday with a clear head and a warm answer shape, not to add a topic.

Two things are genuinely worth doing daily: the one-pagers (they hold the structure of each subject) and one timed answer (it keeps the twelve-minute shape automatic). Everything else is optional.

Wednesday is the hinge

Wednesday 1 September is logistics day, and it should be treated as an appointment, not a task to fit around study:

  • Travel the route at the hour you will travel on 5 September. Note the journey time, the entrance, and where you will eat.
  • Pack the bag — the documents the instructions require, water, food permitted, a light layer.
  • Check the documents against the instructions line by line, not from memory.
  • Confirm the reporting time from the instructions for your year.

If anything is wrong — a missing document, an unclear venue — Wednesday is the day to fix it, not Sunday morning. The Office of the Bar Confidant's helpdesk is the channel for questions.

What to do about the three-day gaps

The 2027 Examinations run on 5, 8 and 12 September. The gaps are working days, not holidays:

  • 6–7 September: hold Civil Law and Labor — retrieval in the morning, one timed answer in the afternoon.
  • 9–11 September: hold Criminal Law and, above all, Remedial Law and Ethics (25%, and the last sitting). Retrieval and outline rebuilding only.
  • Do not review the paper you have just sat. It cannot be changed, and the review spends attention the next sitting needs.

The three rules

No new material. Anything genuinely new cannot be integrated in a week, and trying costs the retrieval of what is usable.

No questions you might fail on Saturday. A failed question the day before Day 1 buys nothing and costs confidence. Saturday morning is one-pagers only.

No negotiation about sleep. The pre-week is where candidates trade nights for chapters and arrive at 8 a.m. on Sunday depleted. Sleep is the week's second job after stabilising.

The night before

Bag by the door. Clothes chosen. Alarm set, and a second alarm. Nothing to read after the early evening. In bed at the normal hour, whether or not you sleep well — a poor night before a performance is common and survivable.

One last thing

You will not feel ready on Sunday morning. That feeling is not information: it is the predictable response to a high-stakes performance, and it will be there whatever the previous twelve months contained.

What is information: the shape you have practised hundreds of times, the flags you can now answer, the logistics settled on Wednesday, and the fact that the work was done. That is enough to begin.
